Term 4 2016
Term 4 was full of learning and activities. We had lots of things going on at Riverslea and around. We had an awesome Duffy Role Model Assembly with Mary Kippenberger and Peter Charlton Jones. We also had the School Cross Country and also did lots of Play based learning to try to learn to share and cooperate and work together. We went to the A and P Show as well as visited Barnadoes Preschool and the Riverslea Community Preschool, who also visited us. We loved Skipping and Jump Rope for Heart. The trip to Napier and the Aquarium was fun. We had the School Prizegiving and made up our own song “The 12 Days of Riverslea Christmas” We are all looking forward to Xmas and Next year (Mrs B )
I am on Level 2 in Reading. I can count up to 12 and match my numbers. I am learning to write some words now. Te Korowhiti
August/Sept
We are still learning and being involved in lots of activities. Our Inquiry has been about the Rio Olympics 2016. We learnt a lot about different countries and different sports. We each had our own country at the Olympics. Harmony’s country USA came first with the most medals. They got 116 medals ( 43gold, 37 silver, 36 bronze). Te Orihana came 2nd with Great Britain who got 66 medals. Kadyn had NZ who got 18 medals (4gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze). We also watched some of the ParaOlympics which made the students aware of different disabilities and how people use ways to overcome them to win medals eg Blind cyclists and runners and swimmers with only 1 leg. We had our own school Olympics which the students loved. They also got medals. Participation for the tabloids and Gold, Silver ,Bronze for the age races. It was well supported by whanau. All students have made great progress, some being a year above in Reading and 6 months above in Writing and Maths. This term Room 1 has also been involved in a NZ wide programme for Junior classes called #NZReadAloud. We connect with other classes around NZ (10 in all) from Auckland to Dunedin and share our ideas, art work, writing etc on a blog. It is all related to a common chosen book that we are all reading to our class. It is called A Booming in the Night By Ben Brown , a NZ author. As usual we are busy with Fitness and Kiwi Can skills and games. This Term we are learning about Cooperation (Whanaungatanga) with Matua Rocky and Whaea Cass. We have had ‘Getting started’ again T3 with a council funded programme on fitness and coordination skills. We have had Whaea Toni and Matua Julian this term. Grandparent’s reading with the Rotary Grandparents every Friday has continued. Some of us go and read to them for 15 minutes each. They help sponser our Duffy books. We had a Role Model Assembly with Mary Kippenberger (storyteller) and Peter Charlton-Jones (musician) and got our Duffy books for the Term.We also had 2 Role Models form Karamu High come to talk to use about being leaders. We were lucky to have Mr Kevin a Preschool Teacher volunteer time 2 days a week for most of the term. He fixed all of our school bikes for us. The children are loving being out on the bike track again. Whaea Monique (Student Teacher from last year) also volunteers in the classes 2 days a week. It is great to have her skills and empathy with the students. Another highlight for the students was a visit from 2 Magpies Chris Eaton and Matt Garland. They talked to the students about being role models and then took them for games. They loved the Touch Rugby. It has been another awesome term for Miharo (Room1).
